iwis is a German manufacturer of precision chains and mechanical drive technology for the automotive industry as well as mechanical and plant engineering. In addition, the company produces high-precision stamped and bent parts for electrical applications in vehicle construction and for other industries. The company's headquarters are in Munich .

history

The company was founded in 1916 by Johann Baptist Winklhofer , a pioneer in the bicycle, motorcycle, automobile and office machine industries and founder of the Wanderer-Werke , initially as a manufacturer of fuzes .

After the end of the First World War, drive chains for two-wheelers and other things were also produced. In 1933 the founder's sons joined the company. From 1939 timing chains were added to the product portfolio, which were supplied to BMW and Škoda . Other car manufacturers such as Opel and Ford were later supplied. After a new building was added to the original production facility in 1969, the company began manufacturing chain tensioners the following year.

In 1975 the founder's grandson, Gerhard Winklhofer, took over sole management of the company. In 1993 a subsidiary was founded in Strakonice (Czech Republic). In 1999 Johannes Winklhofer took over the management in the fourth generation. In the same year, construction began on a third plant in Landsberg am Lech , which went into operation in 2000. In 2006 the Flexon Group was taken over by iwis. Since 2007 Joh. Winklhofer Beteiligungs GmbH & Co. KG has been the holding company of the iwis group of companies with 24 subsidiaries worldwide. iwis is represented at 45 locations worldwide.

In 2009 the company opened new locations in Brazil, China and South Africa. In 2010 iwis was added in India.

Electromobility became a further focus of activity in 2011. Participation in the Austrian electric mobility provider Thien eDrives was entered into.

In 2012 and 2013 the plant in Landsberg, Upper Bavaria, was expanded. In addition, new production plants were built in the USA (Murray, Ky) and China (Suzhou). The Wilnsdorf location was also expanded in 2013.

In 2014 the Tritan coating center in Landsberg was inaugurated.

In 2017 the company founded iwis systemtechnik GmbH. The company develops and produces high-precision stamped and bent parts for a wide range of electrical / electrotechnical applications. Target industries are the automotive industry, the aerospace industry, white goods, lighting technology and a few more.

At the beginning of June 2018, iwis acquired 100% of Unimet GmbH in Rieden. Unimet is the lead company of the iwis division "iwis smart connect".

In mid-June 2018 iwis opened a newly built plant in Pinghu, China. From there, automotive customers in China / Asia are supplied with timing drives.

The Johannes Winklhofer Foundation has been supporting employees in need since 2017.

iwis was named Supplier of the Year by Opel in 1977, in 1991 with the Q1 Award from Ford, in 1996 with the Bavarian Quality Award , 1998 with the Environmental Award of the City of Munich, in 2002 again with the Bavarian Quality Award and the Bavarian Women's Advancement Award, 2004 winner of the category “ Location champion ”in the“ Factory of the Year ”competition, 2005 overall winner in the same competition. In 2006, 2012 and 2015 iwis won Bavaria's Best 50 .
