Izchak Ioel Linezki

Izchak Joel Linezki ( Russian Ицхак Иоэль Линецкий * 1839 in Vinnitsa , † 1915 in Odessa ) was a Ukrainian - Russian Yiddish -schreibender writer and satirist .

Life

Linezki grew up in a Hasidic family. He became interested in the Haskala from an early age . Against the will of his parents, he secretly went to Zhitomir in 1862 and entered a rabbinical school . There he befriended Lasar Zweifel (1815–1888) and wrote satirical poems that were included in the Yiddish anthology Der beiser marschelik (The evil boss) published in 1879 . His satires related to public figures, mostly devout Jews , assimilated and maskilim .

In the same year 1862 Linezki went on to Kiev . From 1868 he published articles in the Yiddish weekly Kol mewasser . In 1868 his successful serial novel Dos poilische jingl (The Polish Youth) was published there . In the later editions this satirical representation of the Hasids was called Dos Hasidic jingl . In 1872 he published a calendar with parodic poems and depictions of everyday Jewish life. In the second half of the 1870s he failed with the founding of the newspapers Isrolik in Lemberg (together with Abraham Goldfaden ) and Nazional in Romania . In his articles in Isrolik, Linezki defended Yiddish as the only literary language for the Jews, as Hebrew was unsuitable for modern times.

In the 1880s, Linezki was briefly enthusiastic about the ideas of the Chowewe Zion and wrote a number of Yiddish Zionist articles. He translated the eleven-volume history of the Jews from the beginnings to the present by Heinrich Graetz and Gotthold Ephraim Lessing's Nathan the Wise , Jehuda Leib Gordon's poem Kozo schel jod (The Point of Iodine) and others into Yiddish . In 1888 the first volume of Scholem Alejchem's literary almanac Yiddische Folksbibliotek Linezki's novel Der worem in chrein (The worm in horseradish ) appeared as a continuation of his first novel without its satirical character. The novel was published in 1898 as an independent book under the title Nit toit nit lebedik, Or dem poilischn jingl's a sun .
