Izidoro Martins Júnior

José Izidoro Martins Júnior (born November 24, 1860 in Recife , † August 22, 1904 in Rio de Janeiro ) was a Brazilian poet lawyer .

Martins Júnior campaigned for the establishment of the republic and the abolition of slavery during the empire .

He was the founder of the Recifer newspaper O Norte and co-founder of the Pernambucan Academy of Literature . From 1891 he was a lecturer in Brazilian legal history at the Federal University of Pernambuco . For political reasons in particular, he moved to Rio de Janeiro at the beginning of the 20th century . In 1902 he was elected to the Brazilian Academy of Literature (cadeira 13).

His best-known works include Vigílias literárias (Verse, 1879) and the culture-critical work O escalpelo: estudo crítico de política, letras e costumes (1881), both of which he published together with Clóvis Beviláqua .
