Ján Lipský

Ján Lipský (Latin Joannes Lipszky de Szedlicsna , Hungarian / German János Lipszky von Szedlicsna ; born April 10, 1766 in Sedličná ; † May 2, 1826 ibid) was a Slovak cartographer and officer in the army of the Austrian Empire .

His great-grandfather Daniel Lipský, the deputy mayor of Trenčín, has the title of nobility from Ferdinand III. received in 1649. Ján Lipský joined the army in 1784 and became major in 1807 and colonel in 1809 in Hussar Regiment 2 . In 1805 and 1809 he took part in the campaigns of Archduke and Palatine Joseph Anton Johann . Ján Lipský used German and Latin in his official correspondence (official signature was Joannes Lipszky de Szedlicsna, J. v. Lipszky, J. Lipszky mp, etc.), his private correspondence is predominantly Slovak, in Slovak he wrote his memoirs and the will.

In 1813 he retired and withdrew to his estates. The primary school and kindergarten in his birthplace is named after him.

From 1799 he also worked as a mapper and, with the cartographer Bogdanich, surveyed around 500 Hungarian localities on behalf of the Hungarian Lieutenancy . His portfolios are considered to be the first maps of Hungary and Transylvania to be drawn up on the basis of reliable surveys . He also wrote the first complete encyclopedia of place names in Hungary.
