János Balogh [ ˈjaːnoʃ ˈbɒloɡ ] (born September 10, 1892 in Kézdivásárhely , Transylvania , Austria-Hungary (German Szekler Neumarkt ), today Târgu Secuiesc , Romania ; † September 12, 1980 in Budapest ) was a Hungarian correspondence chess master .

Balogh was born a Hungarian. In 1918, Transylvania became part of Romania and Balogh received Romanian citizenship. Until 1933 he worked as a lawyer in Miercurea Ciuc (Romania). From 1934 he lived in Budapest. He took the Hungarian citizenship and worked as a judge until 1934.

Correspondence chess

Balogh has participated in many international distance tournaments since 1910. In 1930 he reached place 2-3 at the IFSB National Championship. In 1932 he finished 4th in this tournament. At the 1st European Team Championship, which began in 1935, he played on the top board for Hungary, which won this tournament. In 1936/37 he defeated Grandmaster Paul Keres in a long distance game . He took part in the first three correspondence chess world championships and at the age of 78 he still took part in the jubilee tournament of the German correspondence chess federation, which was very busy.

Tournament chess

Balogh was also successful on the board. He represented Romania at the unofficial Chess Olympiad in 1926 , in which he and the team took third place, as well as the Chess Olympiad in 1928 , 1930 and 1931 . He won the unofficial Chess Olympiad in 1936 with Hungary, at the same time he achieved the third-best result on the first reserve board.

Balogh Defense

The Balogh defense (1. e4 d6 2. d4 f5 or by moving from the Staunton gambit to 1. d4 f5 2. e4 d6) and a variant of the Budapest gambit , which are named after the moves 1. d4 Nf6 2. c4 e5 3. dxe5 Ng4 4. e4 d6. According to the current state of theory, both are not entirely correct.
