Järva-Madise (historical German name St. Matthäi ) is a village ( Estonian küla ) in the Estonian rural community of Albu in Järva County .

Location and history

Sankt Matthäi Church in Järva-Madise

Järva-Madise is the main town in the rural municipality of Albu ( Albu vald ). The village has 95 inhabitants (as of 2010). It was first mentioned in a document in 1427. Järva-Madise and its pastorate were the center of the parish of the same name until the 19th century ( Järva-Madise kihelkond ).

The construction of today's Evangelical Lutheran St. Matthäi Church in Järva-Madise began in the first quarter of the 14th century. The builders probably came from the Swedish Baltic Sea island Gotland . The single-nave church is one of the smallest churches in Estonia.

The altar from 1680 comes from Christian Ackermann (d. 1710). The pulpit from 1650 is made by Lüdert Heissmann , the figures of Christ and the Evangelists are the work of Elert Thiele (died before 1674). The church tower was built in 1858. In 1902 the Estonian organ builder Gustav Terkmann (1850–1924) built a new organ for the church.

From 1623 to 1633 Heinrich Stahl (1600–1657), one of the founders of the Estonian written language , was pastor in Järva-Madise.

In August 1936 a monument to the Estonian writer Anton Hansen Tammsaare (1878-1940) was inaugurated in Järva-Madise . He was baptized in Järva-Madise. The church of Järva-Madise and the inhabitants of the village play a key role in his most famous novel Tõde ja õigus (German title "Truth and Justice"). The monument, created by the Estonian sculptor Ferdi Sannamees (1895–1963), stands in front of the administrative district and court building, which was described by Hansen-Tammsaare and thus made famous. The parents Hansen Tammsaares, Peeter and Ann Hansen are buried in the old cemetery of Järva-Madise.
