Elert Thiele

Elert Thiele († before February 27, 1674 in Tallinn ) was a sculptor and art carver working in Estonia .

Elert Thiele (also Elert Diel) came to Tallinn from Copenhagen in 1652 . In 1661 he became a citizen of Tallinn. He was one of the most important representatives of the early Baroque in the Baltic States .

His most important works include the council chamber frieze in the Tallinn Town Hall (1667), works in the Tallinn Nikolaikirche (1654, destroyed in World War II) and the Church of the Holy Spirit (around 1660), the pulpits of the churches of Vormsi and Pärnu-Jaagupi ( both 1660), the wooden door at the house Suur-Karja 1 in Tallinn (1665) and a carved crucifix in the Russian Orthodox Resurrection Cathedral in Narva .

Elert Thiele was married to Anna Martens. Shortly after his death, a student of Thiele, the well-known sculptor Christian Ackermann , married the widow.
