Life
Murmann was the son of the carpenter Henrik Murmann and his wife Mathild (née Farkas). From 1903 he studied furniture making in Vienna, but lost his right hand in an accident in 1906. From 1908 to 1912, despite this handicap, he studied sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna under Josef Müllner . He went to Paris for two years and in 1913 became a member of the Société nationale des beaux-arts , which was headed by Auguste Rodin at the time . He then lived in Berlin until 1918. Here he exhibited some works in the pavilion of the Berlin Secession in 1915 and 1916 and worked as an illustrator for Paul Cassirer 's publishing house , where he designed covers for articles in magazines such as the wartime . For three years he moved with his wife Gizella and his two sons Árpád and Géza to Budapest and then back to his hometown. In 1921 Murmann stayed in New York City . Pictures of him were shown in the 1923 exhibition Artists of the Berlin Secession . In addition to sculpture, he dealt with painting, designed posters, wallpaper, clothing, textiles and created ceramics. He exhibited at the Brooklyn Museum of Art and the Art Center in New York in 1927. He received international awards, for example his textile designs were awarded at the World Exhibition in Brussels in 1935 and at the Paris Expo in 1937. After the annexation of Austria in 1939 Murmann left Bratislava and lived in London until his death.
