József Egry
József Egry (born March 15, 1883 in Zalaújlak , Kingdom of Hungary , † June 19, 1951 in Badacsonytomaj on Lake Balaton) was a Hungarian painter and graphic artist.
The son of day laborers went to the Munich Art Academy for a few months in 1904 , and in 1905 he attended the Académie Julian in Paris . From 1906 to 1908 he was a student of Károly Ferenczy and Pál Szinyei Merse at the local art school in Budapest . In 1907 he received a state grant for his painting “Before the Asylum” . In 1911 he went to Belgium. There he was particularly influenced by the works of Constantin Meunier . As a soldier in the First World War, he fell seriously ill in 1916 and came to convalescence at Lake Balaton , which was his home for the rest of his life. On the south-western bank, first in the small town of Keszthely , then in 1928 in the shadow of a former volcanic mountain, the painter settled in the small wine village of Badacsony . There he became the painter of the lake with his expressionistic painting style .
He died there in 1951. In 1973 his house in Badacsony was converted into a museum in his memory, which still exists today (2009).
