József Vándor

József Vándor SDB (born October 29, 1909 in Dorog , Hungary; † October 8, 1979 in Santa Clara , Cuba) - also called José Vándor , born as József Wech - was a Hungarian religious priest and missionary in Cuba .

Life

The son of Sebestyén Wech and Mária Puchner went to school with Franciscans . In 1927/28 he went to the Salesians of Don Boscos . On August 13, 1932, he made his perpetual profession as a Salesian and studied philosophy and theology in Turin . In May 1936 he changed his surname to Vándor (Hungarian 'Wanderer'). On 5 July 1936 he was in the Basilica of Our Lady Help of Christians for ordained priests .

In the same year he went to Cuba as a missionary. First he was headmaster and chaplain in Guanabacoa until 1940 , then he became principal of the agricultural school in Moca in the Dominican Republic . Because of his charisma , he was appointed novice master .

In 1946 he moved to the College of Arts and Trades in Camagüey as an administrator . From 1954 until his death he lived in Santa Clara. He was supposed to supervise the construction of the local school for arts and crafts and became the first rector after it opened. It remained so until 1961, when all schools in Cuba were nationalized.

Subsequently, he was first appointed rector, then - after being promoted to parish - pastor of the parish of Our Lady of Mount Carmel .

Beatification process

The beatification process began on October 8, 2003, and the diocesan process was solemnly concluded in 2008. On January 21, 2017, Pope Francis awarded him the heroic degree of virtue as a preliminary stage to beatification.
