Jörg Balack (* 12. April 1941 in Berlin , † 8. October  1992 in Hamburg ) was a German politician of the SPD . He was mayor of Wedel from 1983 to 1992 .

Life

Born in Berlin , Balack came to Wedel with his family in January 1949 as a teenager. He went to school in Uetersen and from 1962 studied law and economics at the University of Hamburg . He then worked as a government councilor in the interior and cultural authority of the city ​​of Hamburg before he worked as a consultant for the social and construction department of the Altona district .

From 1969 he was a volunteer member of the City Committee for Economics and Transport in Wedel, a year later he moved into the council and became chairman of the SPD parliamentary group. In 1971 he ran for the post of the First City Council, had withdrawn from the council before the vote, but was defeated by Klaus Neumann-Silkow. In 1974 Balack returned to the Wedel Council. From 1978 Balack was Deputy Mayor Wedels, in February 1983 the Social Democrat was elected mayor and took office on July 1, 1983. In February 1989 he was re-elected. During his second term in office, Balack died on October 8, 1992 after a long illness. In May 1992 he did not take part in the council meeting for the first time due to illness, in August he resumed his work after a long hospital stay, at the beginning of October his health deteriorated, he died in the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf as a result of delayed pneumonia and pleurisy.

His nine-year term included the opening of the first shopping arcade in Wedel ("Bona-Passage") in 1983, the construction of the medical center at Rosengarten in 1986, a large discotheque on Rissener Strasse in 1986 and the renovation of the train station by 1985, the opening of the Ernst-Barlach-Haus 1987, the 775th anniversary of the city in 1987 and the redesign of the main shopping street Bahnhofstrasse (until 1988). In addition, environmental protection as well as social and educational policy and the dialogue between administration and the population under Balack increasingly moved into the focus of political action in the city. Balack tried to improve the local job market and the housing situation, he was nicknamed "Jörg Mayor" among the population.

In April 1996 a bike and hiking trail starting from the old town of Wedel was named after Balack.
