Jörg Eipel (born September 7, 1957 in Berlin ) is a former German boxer . He was European welterweight champion .

Life

Eipel, who had been coached by Werner Papke since he was twelve, fought his first fight as a professional boxer in September 1975 and won it on points against the Dutchman Giampaolo Piras. In June 1976, at the age of 18, he became German welterweight champion by winning points over Horst Brinkmeyer from Cologne . At the beginning of October 1976 he defeated the former European champion Lothar Abend in Hamburg. According to the Hamburger Abendblatt , the “brilliant technician” underlined “that in a few years Germany will again have a welterweight of stature.” At the end of October 1976, he faced Brinkmeyer again on. The fight ended in a draw, Eipel remained German champions. In March 1977 he suffered his first defeat as a professional boxer when he lost to Clement Tshinza in the Berlin Deutschlandhalle .

In August 1977 the Berliner became European champion through a controversial demolition victory over the Dane Jørgen Hansen . Hansen determined the fight, but was disqualified in the 13th round after a headbutt. Eipel had sustained an eyebrow injury in the tenth lap when the Dane accidentally butted his head. “For almost 13 laps, the 19-year-old demonstrated that he is not yet ready for major international tasks. Now he's standing there with a European title that doesn't deserve him and which he should find difficult to defend, ”wrote the Hamburger Abendblatt after the fight in West Berlin.

In December 1977 Eipel stepped into the ring for the first time as European champion, he met the French Alain Marion in the French city of Creil . In the 15th round, Eipel was counted after his opponent hit him with a right. His coach Papke was later criticized for not throwing in the towel. The German resumed the fight, was hit badly again and fell unconscious to the ground. Eipel suffered cardiac arrest, a firefighter saved him with a heart massage, mouth-to-mouth resuscitation had to be given and heart-strengthening injections had to be given. The ring physicians found a significant drop in blood pressure and breathing difficulties in Eipel, who was admitted to a hospital. He was in a coma in a hospital in Paris for 25 days with brain trauma . Because blood had flowed into the lungs, an incision was made in the trachea. His coach Papke said it was a mistake to let Eipel compete in the welterweight division because he lacked the substance. In October 1978, Eipel, who was one of boxing manager Willy Zeller's protégés, prepared  for his return to the ring during training. It was planned that he would start on November 6, 1978, the Bund Deutscher Berufsboxer (BDB) demanded by means of an ultimatum to the organizer of the fight to forego this, which was observed, against which Eipel's lawyer protested. Previously, Eipel had not been given a fight permit by the BDB. Ultimately, Eipel did not fight a fight as a professional boxer.
