Lothar Abend (born January 15, 1944 in Brieg / Lower Silesia ) is a former German boxer . He was European champion of professional boxers in featherweight.

Career

Amateur career

Lothar Abend ended up in Kiel after being expelled by the Poles . He grew up there and started boxing when he was 13. He was very talented and was German junior featherweight champion in 1960 and 1961. He became a professional boxer at the age of 18. He was therefore unable to achieve any further success as an amateur. He played a total of 60 amateur fights. Evening went through an apprenticeship as a bricklayer, later he worked for two years as a seaman on a Dutch fishing cutter and as an iron bender .

Profile career

Abend, who had signed a professional contract with Wilfrid Schulz , played his first professional fight on September 6, 1963 in Kiel. The boxer, supervised by trainer Winfried Priess , achieved a point victory over Cologne's Rolf Kersten. In the next few months he fought mainly in the north German rings of Hamburg , Oldenburg and Kiel and remained victorious in his first twelve fights. On June 18, 1965 he won in Kiel over Klaus Jäger after 12 rounds on points and thus became German featherweight champion.

After defeating the strong opponents Pierre Tirlo , Noel Soetens , Teddy Larsen and Roger Younsi , he boxed on February 5, 1966 in Kiel against the French Maurice Tavant for the European lightweight title. The more experienced Tavant turned out to be the stronger and won this fight through tech. KO in the 10th round. On September 7, 1966 Lothar Abend tried to become German lightweight champion in the boxing evening organized by the then promoter Theodor Wittenbrink in Kiel against Karl Furcht from Cologne . The attempt failed because Feart won over Lothar Abend in the 7th round by a technical knockout.

On April 15, 1967 Lothar evening successfully defended his German featherweight championship title by a techn. KO victory in the 9th round over Paul Krucik from Bad Oeynhausen . On September 13, 1968, he received another chance against the Spaniard Manuel Calvo to box the European featherweight championship. The fight took place in Barcelona and ended with a technical knockout victory in the 6th round for Manuel Calvo.

But Lothar Abend did not give up. After defeating a number of top international boxers, he got the chance to fight the Italian Tommaso Galli for the European super featherweight title on July 14, 1971 in Lignano . After 15 rounds, Galli was awarded the point victory and thus Lothar Abend's fourth attempt to become European champion had failed. The fifth attempt was successful. On October 13, 1972 evening in Hamburg defeated the Italian Domenico Antonio Chiloiro after 15 rounds on points and was the new European super-featherweight champion. Abend received a fee of 5000 DM for the fight.

Lothar Abend defended his title on February 3, 1973 in Kiel by a techn. KO victory in the first round over the Belgian Jean de Keers , on May 13, 1973 in Kiel by a technical knockout victory over the French Felix Said Brami , in this fight he received his maximum salary as a professional boxer with 15,000.00 DM and on December 7, 1973 in Hamburg by winning points over the Italian Ugo Poli . In the evening manager Schulz aimed at a fight for the world championship in lightweight for his protégés, which never came about. According to Schulz, Abend received offers for voluntary title defense in France, Spain and the Scandinavian countries, which comprised 40,000 to 50,000 D-Marks per fight. During his fights in Germany he received smaller sums, for example around 20,000 D-Marks for defending his title against Poli. In May 1974, Abend was awarded the Golden Badge of Honor of the Association of German Professional Boxers .

On May 7, 1974, he went to the fourth title defense in Oslo against the Norwegian Svein Erik Paulsen . Paulsen defeated Lothar Abend with a technical knockout in the third round and wrested him from the European title. Abend, who had never seen the Norwegian fight before, went down in the second round and was counted three times in the third round before the fight was stopped. His protégé was caught cold, the first hit was the beginning of the end, said his coach Winfried Priess after the defeat. Evening was rewarded for the fight with 40,000 D-Marks.

He also fought his next fight abroad. In Helsinki he  lost to the Finn Erik Nikkinen on points in November 1974. Compared to the title fight against Paulsen, the remuneration was significantly lower at 5000 D-Mark. According to Abends and his trainer Priess, the judges' judgment did not reflect the course of the fight and gave the Finn an undue advantage.

In the following years Lothar Abend boxed more or less every opponent who faced him. There were also opponents who were much heavier than him. He also fought frequently abroad and lost many fights in the process. Of the opponents who defeated him, only Cemal Kamacı from Turkey , Erik Nikkinen from Finland and Jörg Eipel from Berlin are mentioned. But he recovered and lost only one of his last eight fights. On March 18, 1978 he played his last fight in Uetersen , where he was victorious against the Swiss Ruedi Vogel on points.

After boxing

During his boxer career, Lothar Abend worked as a construction worker for a long time before he started his own business as a representative of building materials. Because of his fighter heart, he is not forgotten by the north German boxing fans and is still a welcome guest at boxing events in the north of Germany. Today he lives in the Russee district of Kiel .
