Jørgen Jensen (politician)

Jørgen Jensen (born January 17, 1920 in Copenhagen , † April 13, 1987 ) was a Danish politician and trade unionist . From 1977 to 1987 he was chairman of the Communist Party of Denmark (DKP, Danish Danmarks Kommunistiske Parti ).

Life

Jensen, son of a working-class family, was a car mechanic by profession. He had been unionized since 1940 and joined the DKP during the German occupation of Denmark in 1941. Since 1952 he was a member of the Central Committee and the Executive Committee of the DKP. Jensen headed the trade unions department there. From 1962 to 1978 he was chairman of the metalworkers union in Lyngby . In 1966 he was elected chairman of the auto mechanics union and the board of the Danish Blacksmiths and Machine Workers Association.

Jensen was also active in the party's peace work and from 1962 president of the Danish Peace Conference. Jensen was a member of the Folketing from 1975 to 1979 as a DKP member ( elected in Helsingør in 1975 and 1977 ). From 1977 he was also parliamentary spokesman for the DKP.

After Knud Jespersen's death , he was elected chairman of the DKP in December 1977. He held this post until his death in 1987. While eurocommunist positions prevailed in the communist parties of other Nordic countries , the DKP under Jensen continued to follow its Moscow-loyal line.
