Jewish elementary school (Eschwege)

The Jewish elementary school in Eschwege , today's district town of the Werra-Meißner district in Hesse , was founded in 1827 and closed on October 1, 1939. The elementary school was also known as the Israelite elementary school . The former school building is now registered as a cultural monument in the list of monuments of the State of Hesse.
The school building at Schulstrasse 3 was built in 1839 at the same time as the neighboring Eschweg synagogue . The employed teacher also worked as a chasan for the Jewish community . The following teachers are mentioned: until 1851 a teacher Schloß, from 1851 to 1870 Chasan and teacher M. Engelbert (there were 28 students in the school in 1866), from 1870 to 1907 Chasan Werthan, from 1907 to 1931 teacher Simon Glauberg and from 1931 teacher Sally Wiesenfelder.
The number of pupils in the Jewish elementary school, which was attended by around 80 children around 1870, has declined sharply over time. When the school was closed in autumn 1939, almost 40 children were still attending the school. During the November pogroms on November 9 and 10, 1939, all male Jews in the city were taken into so-called protective custody and housed in the school for a few days before they were transported to the Buchenwald concentration camp .
After the end of the Second World War, the school and synagogue were briefly used again by a Jewish community - the school served as the seat of the Jewish DP community in Eschwege, which had formed after 1945 when there was a camp near Eschwege for concentration camp survivors, including many Jewish people Faith housed. This new Jewish community dissolved again in 1952 after most of the Jews had left Eschwege.
The school building, now a listed building, has been privately owned since 1952 and is now used as a residential and commercial building.
