Former school and rabbinate building in Fischach

The former school and rabbinate building in the Swabian market town of Fischach was built between 1845 and 1847 in the Judenhof next to the synagogue and was used by the Israelite religious community until 1939. A Jewish elementary school (also known as the Israelite elementary school ) was housed in the building at Am Judenhof 6 from 1862 to 1939 . In addition, there is a rabbis and teachers apartment and a Kellerquellenbad (was mikveh ). The building is a three-storey hipped roof , which is registered as a monument in the Bavarian list of monuments.

history

In the first half of the 19th century, the number of Jewish community members in Fischach increased sharply. At times, even more Jews than Christians lived in the village. In 1840, for example, according to a census by the regional court, the population consisted of 253 Catholics and 289 Jews. Since the introduction of compulsory schooling in 1802, all children in Fischach (regardless of denomination) had to attend the Catholic elementary school.

During this time, the Jewish community members wished to have their children taught in a Jewish elementary school. Therefore, from 1845 to 1847, the Israelite religious community built a community hall right next to the synagogue, which provided the space required for a school and a rabbi and teacher apartment. In 1862 the Jewish teacher Israel Wahler began teaching in Fischach.

After the National Socialists came to power, more and more Jews from Fischach tried to emigrate. The Jewish teacher Ludwig Stein also left Fischach in 1939. The school then had to be closed. In 1942 the Fischach community bought the unused building for 6,500 Reichsmarks. Later it came back into private hands and was used as a residential building.

present

The market town of Fischach plans to buy the building again and then to renovate it as part of the renovation of the town center. It will then be used for public purposes. The intention is to set up a museum there that will, among other things, document the Jewish history in Fischach.
