Angenrod Jewish Community
A Jewish community in Angenrod , a district of Alsfeld in the Vogelsbergkreis in Hesse , has been recorded since 1736. The Jews Falck and Isaac are already mentioned in the middle of the 17th century. The history of the Jewish community ended in 1942 with the deportation of the last eight Jewish residents.
history
A strong immigration of Jewish residents took place in the second half of the 17th century when Prince Abbot Bernhard Gustav von Baden-Durlach expelled the Jews from his domain. The landlords , the von Nodung family, allowed their settlement in Angenrod as protective Jews . The Jews, who had to pay protection money, could build small houses and live by trading in goods. They lived in the area of what is now Judengasse , which the locals called New Jerusalem from the 19th century .
synagogue
In 1797 the newly built synagogue on the grounds of the Hofgut was inaugurated. It was 13 meters wide and 7.50 meters wide. It was built in half-timbered construction and offered enough space for the 12 Jewish families. The rabbi's apartment was attached to the synagogue . The synagogue was demolished in 1961 and a freezer was built in its place .
National Socialist Persecution
After 1933, many Jewish community members moved away or emigrated due to increasing disenfranchisement and reprisals.
The memorial book of the Federal Archives lists 41 Jewish citizens born in Angenrod who fell victim to the genocide of the National Socialist regime .
