Bourbonne-les-Bains Jewish community

A Jewish community in Bourbonne-les-Bains in the Haute-Marne department in the Grand Este region of France had existed since the 18th century.

history

Jews settled in Bourbonne-les-Bains during the French Revolution in 1790. The Jewish community had 92 members in 1845 and had a Jewish elementary school as early as 1837. A synagogue already existed before 1825 , because an employed ministre-officiant was named as early as this year . The last service was held in the synagogue, Rue des Capucins, in 1914 . It was sold and is still used today as a residential building.

National Socialist Persecution

During the Second World War , the Jews who fled to Bourbonne-les-Bains and tried to go into hiding in the spa town were deported and murdered. At the school a plaque commemorates the deported children.

The Jewish cemetery in Bourbonne-les-Bains was established in 1829/30. It is located in the hallway Sous les Plaudes and today 50 are still about grave stones ( Mazevot ) available.
