Jewish community of Lieser

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A Jewish community in Lieser , a local community in the Rhein-Lahn district in Rhineland-Palatinate , existed as early as the 17th century. The Jewish community was destroyed by the National Socialist persecution .

history

A first proof of the settlement of Jews is documented in the tax lists of August 27, 1663, in the "Numbrement der Judenschaft in Stadt und Ambt Wittlich", as the Lieserer "Hausstädt Moyses and Baruch, Jewish two marriages" to a marriage gulden in the amount were assessed by two Reichstalers each. The small community in Lieser had had a prayer room since around the 17th century. Since 1896 the Jewish community in Brauneberg looked after both the Lieserer and the Mülheim , Veldenzer and Wintrich Jews. In 1930 the Lieserer synagogue was demolished because it was in disrepair .

New Jewish cemetery in Lieser

A first Jewish cemetery was possibly created as early as the Middle Ages . In 1913 a new Jewish cemetery was created on the edge of the forest on today's Richard-Wagner-Straße. This was devastated during the Nazi era , but restored by the Lieser community after the Second World War.

While in 1906 there were still 1597 Catholics, 15 non-Catholics and 15 Jews living in Lieser, in 1932 only 6 people of Jewish faith were resident in the village.

National Socialist Persecution

In 1938 there were still six Jews living in Lieser. The memorial book of the Federal Archives lists 10 Jewish citizens born in Lieser who fell victim to the genocide of the National Socialist regime .
