history

Profane synagogue in Ober-Seemen

The Jewish community in Ober-Seemen had a synagogue , a religious school ( Israelite elementary school until 1923 ), a ritual bath ( mikveh ) and a cemetery . For a long time a teacher was employed who was also active as a prayer leader and schochet . The Jewish community of Ober-Seemen belonged to the Orthodox provincial rabbinate of Upper Hesse , based in Giessen . In the middle of the 19th century, two thirds of the Jewish traders were merchants, the rest of them were cattle dealers and craftsmen.

National Socialist Persecution

After 1933 some of the Jewish community members moved away or emigrated due to the increasing disenfranchisement and reprisals, mainly to the USA , South Africa and Palestine . In October 1937 the church, which still had 15 members, decided to dissolve it. At the beginning of 1938, the last community leader, Simon Frank, dissolved the building and sold the synagogue. During the November pogrom in 1938 there were riots in Ober-Seemen against the secular synagogue and the Jewish residents still living there.

The memorial book of the Federal Archives lists 33 Jewish citizens born in Ober-Seemen who fell victim to the genocide of the National Socialist regime .
