Jewish community of Trabelsdorf
A Jewish community in Trabelsdorf , a district of the Lisberg community in the Bamberg district in northern Bavaria , has existed since the beginning of the 17th century at the latest.
history
There is evidence of Jews in Trabelsdorf since 1736, but a synagogue was only mentioned in 1810 . In 1904 the Jewish community in Lisberg joined that of Trabelsdorf. According to this, the congregation had a total of eleven religiously responsible male members. When the Jewish community in Walsdorf only had six community members, this community also joined that of Trabelsdorf in 1907. The Jews in Trabelsdorf lived scattered around the village. They buried their dead in Lisberg .
The Jewish community had belonged to the Bischberg district rabbinate since 1825 , whose seat was relocated to Burgebrach in 1826 .
synagogue
A synagogue was built around 1800 and the building also contained classrooms and a teacher's or cantor's apartment. A ritual bath was also available until 1884 .
During the November pogrom in 1938 , SA people from Bamberg, supported by villagers, destroyed the interior of the synagogue and the ritual objects . In order not to endanger the neighboring houses, the synagogue was not set on fire. The synagogue building was acquired by the community in 1940 for 800 Reichsmarks and fell to the Free State of Bavaria after the war. The synagogue building was later sold to private individuals and has been preserved as a residential building to this day.
school
From 1826 to 1869 the children of the Jewish communities Trabelsdorf, Lisberg, Walsdorf and Kolmsdorf attended the newly founded religious school in Kolmsdorf. In 1869 the school was moved to Trabelsdorf and Walsdorf.
National Socialist Persecution
In 1933 there were still 18 Jewish people living in Trabelsdorf. Due to the increasing reprisals and the consequences of the economic boycott , four Jewish community members left the place. The Mahler family emigrated to the USA . On February 17, 1936, the house of the merchant Silbermann was broken into and the owner was badly mistreated. The perpetrator was caught and sentenced to one year in prison. On April 25, 1942, the last nine Jewish residents were deported to Izbica .
The memorial book of the Federal Archives lists 24 Jewish citizens born in Trabelsdorf who fell victim to the genocide of the National Socialist regime .
