Büren Jewish Cemetery

The Büren Jewish Cemetery is a burial site for Jews in the East Westphalian town of Büren in the Paderborn district in North Rhine-Westphalia . It is still 1,494 square meters and has been a listed building since 1987 .

The Jewish cemetery is located outside the medieval city on Siddinghäuser Strasse between Katharinenstrasse and Sebastianstrasse. It was probably documented from the middle of the 16th century until 1940. The last gravestone was set for Siegfried Klestadt, who died in 1934.

The cemetery became the property of the Jewish community in 1851 and was desecrated in 1906, 1920, 1934 and 1938. After the property was sold to the city of Büren in 1938, makeshift homes were built on the site, and numerous tombstones ( mazewot ) were used for the substructure . The barracks were not removed until the late 1960s. The restoration of the cemetery was not carried out properly. Some tombstones were put together incorrectly and it is not certain that all steles are in their original location. There are still around 70 tombstones in the cemetery.
