history

The exact date of the construction of the cemetery is not known, but the oldest surviving tombstones date from the first half of the 18th century. In the 19th century the cemetery was expanded. Burials took place until the outbreak of World War II , after which the cemetery was no longer maintained; the new part of the cemetery was vandalized after the war, the tombstones were removed in 1991. After 1994 the old part of the cemetery was restored.

background

There was no Jewish community in Běleč; the cemetery, which is located on the cadastre of the municipality of Běleč, two kilometers to the north-east between the Elbančice and the village of Vilice , was established by the Jewish municipality in Mladá Vožice . It occupies an area of 2805 m² and today has 180 preserved tombstones (according to other information, 2944 m² and 150 tombstones). It is striking that most of the inscriptions on the tombstones face west. Today the cemetery is owned by the Prague Jewish Community . The cemetery is listed as a cultural monument.
