The Domažlice Jewish Cemetery is a Jewish cemetery in Domažlice (German Taus ), a municipality in the Plzeňský kraj region in south-west Bohemia .

The Domažlice Jewish Cemetery is located on the northern outskirts of Domažlice on Prokop the Great Street (Czech: ulice Prokopa Velikého) south of the U Cihelny pond (German: near the brickworks).

history

There is a plaque on the cemetery wall with the inscription that the cemetery was founded in 1348. This is probably a mistake. There were some Jews in Domažlice in the 14th century who had a cemetery near the Havlovice district, southwest of Domažlice, but today there is an orchard in its place.

Since 1541, Jews were prevented from staying in Domažlice by a privilege of King Ferdinand I. Jews were only able to resettle in Domažlice under Joseph II.

The present cemetery was laid out around 1850 and used by the Jewish community of Domažlice , founded in 1873 . It contains about 100 graves.

When Ulica Prokopa Holého was widened between 1987 and 1989, the Jewish cemetery was reduced in size. In this context, the original entrance portal from 1891/92 was replaced by a replica.
