The Penkun Jewish Cemetery is a Jewish cemetery in Penkun in the Vorpommern-Greifswald district in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania .

description

The cemetery was south of the city on Wartiner Weg. It was a small, rectangular space of around 300 to 400 m². Jewish cemeteries were designated as burial places on the official maps and were signed with an L instead of a †. Here the table sheet from 1880 shows only an indistinct signature and no inscription. Most of the time, the squares were created far outside the cities or municipalities, mostly in the barn districts or similar remote locations. In Penkun, the cemetery was in the junction at the end of the local barn district.

history

Little is known about the history of the Jewish cemetery in Penkun. It is said to have been devastated around 1940. In 1952 it was neglected, almost overgrown and surrounded by a hedge. At that time there were still tombstones made of black granite. In the following years, the cemetery property was leveled and built over with the sports field. The tombstones disappeared.
