Biesenthal Jewish cemetery

The Biesenthal Jewish Cemetery is located in the town of Biesenthal in the Barnim district in the northeast of Brandenburg . As a Jewish cemetery , it is a monument and is located next to the city cemetery between Friedhofsweg and Berliner Chaussee.

Only a few tombstones have survived here. They date from the period between 1866 and 1896 and were placed in a semicircle in 1988. Various fragments of broken stones were placed in front of this semicircle. A memorial stone was also set up. The former cemetery hall ( Tahara building ) is still preserved. It is used as a residential building, which has been expanded with various additions.

history

The Jewish cemetery in Biesenthal is probably the oldest Jewish cemetery in the wider area. It was probably created in the middle of the 17th century shortly after the first Jewish families settled in the city. The cemetery was also used by the Jewish communities of Bernau and Eberswalde for a long time . The cemetery was largely destroyed during the Nazi era and afterwards. In 1988 the site was prepared - as far as possible - and the few remaining tombstones were put up again.
