history

The Jewish cemetery was laid out in 1821 immediately northeast of the then Christian (now: communal) cemetery. The two cemeteries were separated from each other by a lilac hedge . During the Nazi era in 1936, the cemetery was given a new enclosure. The last burial took place in April 1937, and in 1938 some gravestones were knocked over. In the years 1947 to 1950 the cemetery was repaired and it was given a new fence. In 1963, the Jewish State Community of Mecklenburg made the unoccupied part of the cemetery of the Evangelical Church available free of charge. In November 1988, a notice board was posted at the cemetery. Between 2003 and 2006 the cemetery was repaired again. In December 2013 the cemetery was desecrated : seven tombstones were knocked over, five of which were damaged.
