Sierpc Jewish Cemetery

The Sierpc Jewish Cemetery in the Polish municipality of Sierpc in the Masovian Voivodeship still contains around 200 tombstones , most of which are in poor condition.

history

The first Jewish cemetery in Sierpc, on the bank of the Sierpienica River, was probably built as early as the 16th century. However, written references date from the 18th century. Until the Second World War , the cemetery covered an area of over 9  hectares . During the German occupation , the cemetery was devastated and the tombstones were used for the sidewalks in Sierpc. In 1947 some Jewish survivors of the Holocaust built a " necropolis ", whereby the cemetery was reduced to 2.5 hectares and the remaining area was assigned to private purposes. Recovered tombstones were then placed in a lapidarium , and a memorial was dedicated to the Jews murdered in the attack on Poland .

None of the approximately 200 tombstones has been preserved in its entirety. Most of the inscriptions are now illegible due to deliberate damage.

Until 2009, the only preserved Tahara house in Mazovia was in the cemetery . It was built in 1928, was used until the 1930s and survived World War II. In 2007, after no protective measures were taken and the building was exposed to increasing levels of vandalism, it collapsed. In the spring of 2009, the rest of the building was dismantled by the local population and firewood was distributed, leaving a cement floor.
