Jewish cemetery in Hüsten

The Jewish cemetery in Hüsten , Hüsten is now a district of Arnsberg in the Hochsauerlandkreis in North Rhine-Westphalia , was first mentioned in 1857, but is likely to be older. The Jewish cemetery is a listed building .

history

There was probably a Jewish cemetery in Hüsten as early as the 18th century, even if it was first mentioned in writing in 1857. It was also used as a burial place by the Jews of neighboring places without their own cemetery. We know of a dispute in 1824, when the Hüsten synagogue community refused to bury a deceased from Arnsberg . The burial tradition of the cemetery ended with the Holocaust . Occasionally there were also burials afterwards. A funeral in 1966 brought anti-Semitic discrimination against a German-Jewish family in Hüsten to the public.

investment

The cemetery was originally laid out away from more densely populated areas. It is now in a residential area. It is about 150 m long, relatively narrow strip of land between other properties. Access is possible from the narrow side of Alt Hüsten Street.

In the sandstone pillars of the neo-classical wrought-iron entrance gate there are plates in Hebrew script . In the entrance area there is a memorial stone from 1988 in memory of the Jewish victims from Hüsten.

42 graves and 23 tombstones are still preserved. One of the tombstones with Gothic style elements is provided with an exclusively Hebrew inscription. Some other monuments have both Hebrew and German-language inscriptions. Most of them dispense with Hebrew inscriptions entirely. The most common is the Grüneberg family with fourteen graves, followed by the Grünebaum (6), Stern (5), Grünewald (5), Mastbaum (4) and Fritzler (4) families.

The cemetery was added to the list of monuments of the city of Arnsberg under the number DL 348 .
