Jewish House (Wanfried)
The Jewish house in Wanfried , a country town in the Werra-Meißner district in northern Hesse , was built in 1620. The half-timbered house at Windgasse 5 is a protected architectural monument .
history
The Jews lived in their own neighborhood in Wanfried. The Jewish ghetto comprised Windgasse , Steinweg , Kleine Gasse and Vor dem Schloß . The Landgrave of Hessen-Wanfried had placed the Jews under his protection against payment with the Judenregal (sovereign right).

The building was built by a Jew in 1620. The saying above the archway is translated: “May happiness increase, Amen. So may it be (God's) will. Shim'on son of Kalanymos. (This house) was completed on Monday, 26th Kislew (5) 381 “(= 21st Dec. 1620).
The stately merchant's house is richly decorated with dew tape , on the corner posts there are columns with scale motifs . The foot struts are lined with the corner posts. On the sleepers and fillers there are ship throats with inlaid round bars .
