Jürgen Brinckmann (born July 1, 1939 in Lübeck ) is a former German soccer player and coach. The defender was used for VfB Lübeck in the Oberliga Nord and Regionalliga Nord and after his playing career he worked as a coach or youth coordinator for several clubs in the Lübeck area. With more than 500 competitive games, he is the player with the most appearances in the history of VfB Lübeck.
Career
As a player
Brinckmann began playing football near Lübeck in 1876 and switched to the VfB student team at the age of 13. In 1958 he made the leap into the league team of VfB for the first time, to which he belonged for the following seventeen years. Born in Lübeck, he established himself as a regular in the formation of the green-whites early on. In particular, a system change under coach Heinz Lucas - who from then on used Brinckmann as a Libero - gave him an increasingly important role as "defense chief" in the North Germans, with whom he spent several seasons in the first-class Oberliga Nord and achieved his greatest success in 1969: As Runner-up behind VfL Osnabrück , VfB was allowed to take part in the promotion round to the Bundesliga for the first and only time, in which, however, only one point could be achieved. After the Hanseatic city decided not to report to the 2nd Bundesliga, he was still active for a year in the fourth-class association league Schleswig-Holstein in 1974/75 and completed his last competitive game for the league team on June 22, 1975 with the promotion game at VfB Peine .
“Brincko” completed 73 games in the Oberliga and 307 matches in the Regionalliga for VfB. In total, he played more than 700 times for VfB and with 534 competitive games is the player with the most appearances in the club's history of the green-whites. In 2010 he was elected by VfB supporters into the club's “legends” and in 2015 was the only VfB player to date to receive the “honorary captain” award from the board.
As an official
After his active playing career, he was coach of the respective first men's team at VfB Lübeck, FC Dornbreite and SC Stockelsdorf, and in the following decades he also took over the coaching position for various youth teams at VfB. The long-standing youth and junior coordinator of the Green-Whites is still working for the association.
Private
Jürgen Brinckmann worked as an authorized signatory for a car dealership in Lübeck for more than forty years. He is married and has one grown daughter and several grandchildren. His wife Karin was treasurer of VfB in the 1980s and is therefore the first woman in the club's history to be represented on the board.
