Jürgen Carls

Jürgen Carls (born December 6, 1939 in Neuenkirchen ) is a German agricultural scientist. He studied international rural development at the TU Berlin and completed his doctorate. He was involved in international development cooperation projects in Europe, Asia, Africa and Latin America. Since 2001 he has been teaching sustainable development at the United Nations Mandated University for Peace in San Jose, Costa Rica .

Life

Jürgen Carls was project manager of the German Society for International Development (GIZ) in Asia (1972–1975), Africa (1978–1981) and Latin America (1993–1998). From 1981 to 1984 he was government advisor to the Portuguese Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, Lisbon with a view to preparing for Portugal's accession to the European Community . Between his assignments he worked as a freelancer for the FAO , GIZ , EU , BMZ , World Bank , Humboldt University Berlin , IDB , IICA and the governments of Costa Rica and Bolivia . From 1993 to 1998 he was the coordinator of the German-Latin American cooperation program on sustainable development, based in San Jose, Costa Rica. From 1998 to 1999 he was coordinator of the advisory group for development research of the German Federal Government (BMZ) in Bonn. Since 2001 he has been Associated Professor at the UN Peace University (UPEACE) in San José, Costa Rica in the fields of environment and development. His professional focus is on sustainable development, management of natural resources, strategic planning, project management, evaluation and impact analysis of development projects, fundraising for sustainable development and environmental conflict resolution. Since 2001 he has been teaching sustainable development at the United Nations Mandated University for Peace in San José, Costa Rica. His specialist areas of expertise are sustainable development, management of natural resources, strategic planning, project management, evaluation of development projects, conflict resolution in the environmental sector and, last but not least, he was involved in the mobilization of financial resources for sustainable development projects.
