Life

Heinemann attended the Carolinum grammar school in Osnabrück, which he graduated from high school in 1956. He then studied photography from 1957 to 1959 at the state school for arts and crafts in Saarbrücken under Otto Steinert and Oskar Holweck . He then studied photography from 1959 to 1962 at the Folkwang School for Design in Essen with Otto Steinert, where he passed his exam in 1962 with a photo essay about the city of Madrid .

From 1962 Heinemann worked as a freelance photojournalist, his clients were church aid organizations such as Adveniat or Misereor . His travels took him to many countries in Latin and Central America, and he had extensive stays all over the world. With a humanistic gesture he photographed the big topics of work, family, children and faith. Heinemann himself describes his black and white photographs as a pictorial condensation of existential questions.

From 1981 he was professor of photography and photo journalism at the Bielefeld University of Applied Sciences , where he retired in 1999. Since then he has lived and worked in Potsdam .
