Press photo of the year

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The choice for the press photo of the year is made through the World Press Photo Awards awarded by the Dutch foundation World Press Photo . The prize, endowed with 10,000 euros, is considered to be the “most prestigious and coveted award in photojournalism ”.

Awarding

In addition to the press photo of the year, the 13-member jury awards three further prizes in ten categories (spot news, general news, people in the news, sport & action, sports reports, current topics, everyday life, portraits, art and entertainment, nature), whereby both the best single pictures and photo series are awarded.

The main prize goes to the picture that “[...] not only represents the photojournalistic embodiment of the year, but also shows a topic, situation or event of high journalistic importance and this in a way that demonstrates an extraordinary degree of visual perception and creativity proves ".

The five photographers Kyōichi Sawada , David Turnley , James Nachtwey , Anthony Suau and Mads Nissen each won the award twice.

For the 2015 election, the foundation applied "for the first time [...] very strict standards," said the head of the foundation. In no previous election has the jury disqualified so many images. Of the submissions that made it to the penultimate round, the foundation was able to prove that one fifth had post-processed image manipulation.
