Orlando Lagos

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Luis Orlando "Chico" Lagos Vásquez (* 1913 in Santiago de Chile ; † 2007 ibid) was a Chilean photographer . He was best known for his recordings of Salvador Allende .

Life

Lagos accompanied Allende's political career for over 20 years. In 1970 he became chief photographer of the Chilean presidential palace La Moneda .

Shortly before Allende's death on September 11, 1973 during the military coup by General Pinochet , Lagos took the last pictures of the president. The photographer escaped the fighting for the palace together with Allendes' daughters Beatrice and Isabel . One of his photos of the President was voted Press Photo of 1973. The author was initially unknown, as Lagos had signed an agreement with the New York Times not to publish his name during his lifetime. In return, he was to receive $ 12,000 for six photographs, which, according to the Chilean daily La Nación, were never paid out to him.

The award was accepted in his place by the New York Times picture editor , Dane Bath. Lagos was not identified as the author of the photo until after his death in 2007 when La Nación revealed his identity.

He is buried at the Cementerio General de Chile .
