Jodi Bieber (* 1966 in Johannesburg , South Africa ) is a South African photographer .

Life

Jodi Bieber grew up in Johannesburg and initially completed three short photography courses at the Market Theater Photography Workshop in her hometown. From 1993 onwards, she continued her training with the daily newspaper The Star , for which she also worked as a freelancer until 1996. Among other things, she accompanied the first democratic elections in her home country in 1994 . After attending the World Press Masterclass in Amsterdam (1996), I did my first commissioned work for the New York Times Magazine and for Geo and the Stern .

In the period that followed, Jodi Bieber was mainly interested in Africa. Her portraits of children and young people on the fringes of South African society, created over the course of ten years, formed the basis for her book Between Dogs and Wolves - Growing up with South Africa , which was published in five different countries in 2006. She was previously represented in the group exhibition Soweto - A South African Legend (2001), which was shown in various German cultural institutes and in South Africa. Reports were also made from Madagascar , the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda , where they documented the outbreak of the Ebola fever epidemic in autumn 2000 .

Jodi Bieber not only works for newspapers and magazines, but also in many cases in cooperation with non-profit or non-governmental organizations such as Doctors Without Borders , Pro Helvetia and UNICEF to realize long-term projects. Outside of Africa she photographed children in Pakistan on behalf of the British aid organization Learning for Life in order to capture their everyday school life . For the anti- AIDS organization Positive Lives , she documented the lives of 100 drug-dependent HIV patients in 2003 who lived in the Las Cañas garbage dump near Valencia .

Jodi Bieber's work has received several awards, including six World Press Photo Awards . In 2009 she won the EU Prize at the Africaine de la Photographie Biennale in Bamako . A well-known photo by Bieber was chosen as Press Photo of the Year 2010. It was created for Time magazine and shows the 18-year-old Afghan Bibi Aisha with a disfigured face. Her husband had her ears and nose cut off on the orders of a Taliban court after she fled him because of his excesses of violence. The Time magazine took the photo on the front cover and the headline to "What Happens if We Leave Afghanistan," without a question mark, an association that also led to the shock effect with the disfigured face debates on this cover.

In 2011, Jodi Bieber's work was part of a large group exhibition of contemporary, politically active South African photographers at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. In 2012, the Stadthaus Ulm organized Jodi Bieber's first solo exhibition entitled Between Darkness and Light as a comprehensive retrospective, which was also presented in 2013 at the Museum Goch . As a result of the two exhibitions, works from Bieber's Real Beauty series were included in the Walther Collection . In 2014 the exhibition was shown in the Australian Center for Photography in Sydney and in the Wits Art Museum in Johannesburg , in 2015 the South African National Gallery presented it as a "mid-career" retrospective. In 2015 Jodi Bieber was also represented at the Antalya Photo Festival in Turkey. 2017 and 2018 became Between Darkness and Light. Selected Works: South Africa 1994-2010 invited to the Fondazione Carispezia in La Spezia , Italy.

In 2019 Jodi Bieber was awarded the Contemporary African Photography Prize, the CAP Prize , for her series #i, 2016-2017 . In #i she portrays 45 young people from Johannesburg, all of whom were born after April 27, 1994, the day of the first free elections in South Africa, and thus examines the question of apartheid in times of the official absence of apartheid.
