Jürgen Herzing (* 1960 in Aschaffenburg ) is a German local politician ( SPD ). He has been Lord Mayor of Aschaffenburg since May 1, 2020 .

Life

Herzing completed an apprenticeship as a chimney sweeper in his parents' company. In 1988 he switched to the professional fire department in Frankfurt am Main, where he worked as a full-time firefighter and paramedic. Later he rose to the higher-level fire service. In 2004 he joined the Aschaffenburg city council for the SPD. From 2014 to 2020 he headed the Department for Environment, Energy and Consumer Protection of the City of Aschaffenburg as Mayor. As such, he was also one of the representatives of Lord Mayor Klaus Herzog . On the occasion of the Bavarian municipal elections in 2020 , the Aschaffenburg SPD nominated him as a candidate for the mayoral election in April 2019. In the first ballot on March 15, 2020, Herzing won 47.9 percent of the votes cast and went first in the runoff election, which took place on March 29. He won this with 66.6 percent of the vote against Jessica Euler ( CSU ). He took up the post of Mayor of Aschaffenburg on May 1, 2020.

Herzing also heads the city's task force to combat the COVID-19 pandemic . He volunteers for the volunteer fire brigade and lives in the Aschaffenburg district of the Austrian Colony .
