biography

Klaus Herzog, Lord Mayor of Aschaffenburg (2017)

Klaus Herzog studied German and political science at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt and worked for 20 years as a grammar school teacher at the Ludwig Geissler School in Hanau . In addition to his job, he carried out research on the subject of “modernizing administration” and has been working on a dissertation on “budgeting” since 1996.

Since 2000, Herzog was the successor to Willi Reiland (also SPD) mayor of the city of Aschaffenburg .

Klaus Herzog was re-elected Mayor on March 12, 2006 with a majority of 89.69% and a voter turnout of 37.9%. Previously, he had been nominated as mayoral candidate for local elections with 100 percent of the delegate votes . A week and a half later, the CSU had decided not to list an opposing candidate.

In July 2011 he was nominated again by the SPD for the mayor election on March 11, 2012. This time the CSU put up an opposing candidate in Winfried Bausback . Klaus Herzog won the election with 82.0% of the vote. The peculiarity of this term of office is that it is being extended by two to eight years in order to put the mayor and city council elections in Aschaffenburg back on a common municipal election date that is uniform throughout Bavaria. So far, the elections have been delayed by two years, the next election is a joint mayor and city council election. It took place in 2020, Herzog was no longer allowed to serve as mayor for reasons of age. Instead, he ran for the city council of Aschaffenburg and was elected to this. He resigned from his position as Lord Mayor on May 1, 2020. His successor is the previous mayor Jürgen Herzing (also SPD).
