Jürgen Mecheels (* 1928 in Stuttgart ; † July 31, 2006 ) was a German chemist who worked in the field of textile research.

Life

Jürgen Mecheels is the son of Otto Mecheels and Lisel Mecheels. He grew up in Mönchengladbach and came to Bönnigheim with his parents in 1944 and to Hohenstein in 1946. He studied chemistry at the University of Heidelberg and graduated with a doctorate in Stuttgart. After several industrial internships, in 1962 he took over the management of the Hohenstein Institute in Bönnigheim that his father had founded .

With his scientific work he founded the quantitative clothing physiology and thus laid the foundation for the development of clothing with high wearing comfort. Jürgen Mecheels expanded all of the industry-related research at the Hohenstein Institute and gave the institute the structure that is still defining today. Thanks to his strategy, he succeeded in addressing environmentally relevant issues in textile production and human-ecological problems in such a way that it became an objective testing system with worldwide distribution under the umbrella of the International Oeko-Tex Association . His achievements were honored with the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon .

When Jürgen Mecheels handed over the management of the institute to his son Stefan Mecheels in 1995, the Hohenstein Institute had grown into a company with over 120 employees. Jürgen Mecheels died on July 31, 2006 at the age of 78.
