Life

Popp first studied at the Friedrich-Alexander University in Erlangen . After completing his intermediate diploma, he moved to the Julius Maximilians University of Würzburg in 1989 , where he received his diploma in 1992 with a thesis on Raman scattering . Popp then researched light scattering on microparticles and received his doctorate in 1995 with summa cum laude in the field of physical chemistry .

After receiving his doctorate from the University of Würzburg in 1995, he was a DFG scholarship holder for one year at Yale University , New Haven, USA. In 2001 he completed his habilitation in physical chemistry at the University of Würzburg. In 2002 he was offered a chair for physical chemistry in Jena , where he has also been the scientific director of the Leibniz Institute for Photonic Technologies eV Jena since 2006 .

Popps research results have been published in more than 450 scientific articles in refereed journals. He also holds several patents in the field of spectroscopic instrumentation.

Popp coordinates the European network of excellence Photonics4Life, is spokesman for the BMBF research focus on biophotonics, member of the BMBF program committee for optical technologies, member of the supervisory board of the Jena mbH business development company, member of the scientific advisory board of JENOPTIK AG, member of the university council of EAH Jena and publisher of the Journal of Biophotonics .

He has been a Fellow of the Society for Applied Spectroscopy since 2009 and a SPIE Fellow since 2012. In 2012 he was awarded an honorary doctorate from Babeş-Bolyai University in Cluj-Napoca, Romania and in 2013 he received the Robert Kellner Lecture Award. In 2018 Popp was awarded both the Berthold Leibinger Innovation Prize and the Kaiser Friedrich Research Prize, and in 2019 the Thuringian Research Prize .
