Jürgen Zwernemann
Jürgen Zwernemann (* 1929 in Wilhelmshaven ) is a German ethnologist .
Life
From 1950 he studied ethnology and English and geography as minor subjects in Mainz . At the Institute for Ethnology and African Studies, Adolf Friedrich , Hermann Baumann and Erika Sulzmann were among his teachers. After studying for a year in Hamburg in 1953, Zwernemann returned to Mainz and obtained his doctorate in 1954 . Then he became an assistant at the Institute for Social and Cultural Anthropology in Hamburg and took part in field research to West Africa. In 1958 he went to Munich and worked in both the state library and the university library. In 1960 he became director of the Africa department at the renowned Linden Museum . After completing his habilitation in Tübingen in 1966 , he became director of the Museum für Völkerkunde Hamburg in 1971 . He retired in 1992.
