JA Holman
JA Holman (born April 17, 1901 in Týnec nad Labem , Austria-Hungary , today the Czech Republic ; † April 20, 1980 in Munich , Federal Republic of Germany ), occasionally also listed under his full name Josef Alfréd Holman or under Jan A. Holman , was a Czechoslovakian director , screenwriter and film producer .
biography
After graduating from high school, Holman completed a technical degree at the Technical University in Prague and earned the title of engineer. In the 1920s he worked as an editor of the Tribuna newspaper , later he was co-editor of the magazine Trn (Dorn) and worked at Škoda in the promotion races.
Holman was also involved in Czech radio and worked for a short time as an announcer for a radio journal. In addition, he was active in the field of documentary film as early as the 1920s and shot various documentaries and commercials, such as Revoluce krve a Ducha , German for example, revolution of blood and spirit . In 1932 he directed the fictional silent film Rajská Narkosa with Ela Šárková, with whom he pioneered. A German and a French version of the historical film Port Arthur from 1936, which was shot in the Barrandov Studios , was made, with Holman Nicolas Farkas as assistant director. The 1937 film comedy Děvčata, nedejte se! Holman shot together with Hugo Haas , the 1938 war drama Zborov (Choirs) with George Nightingale resp. Jiří Slavíček. In 1941 he directed the romantic drama Rukavička , for which he also wrote the screenplay. This was followed by the 1942 film drama Velká přehrada , for which Holman also provided the script. The Heimat film Love, Passion and Suffering ( Láska, vášeň a žal ), made in the second half of 1942 and made in the Barrandov Studios in German production for Prag-Film, was another directorial work by Holman.
The romantic comedy with music Two hearts full of bliss with Fita Benkhoff , Susi Nicoletti and Adrian Hoven adapted Holman in 1957 and brought it to the cinema. God's picture book is the name of a documentary he shot in 1960. His last recorded work is directing, which he took over in 1965 for an episode of the documentary television series Survival .
Holman died on April 20, 1980 at the age of 79 in Munich.
