J. Konrad Stettbacher

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

J. Konrad Stettbacher (born July 26, 1930 in Bern ; † July 16, 2016 in Lucerne ) was a Swiss non-fiction author and a temporary psychotherapist. From 1972 he practiced the “Therapy of the Four Steps”, which he had developed. In 1995 his practice was revoked because he could not prove the necessary qualifications.

Therapy concept

Stettbacher was a self-taught therapist . His concept of a learning process for self-help was based on the assumption that human health is shaped in the phase of life that he called the primary phase of life; this includes the fetal period , the perinatal period (around the time of birth), and the first year of life after birth. Similar concepts for primary therapy existed before Stettbacher's work, but they are still controversial to this day.

Stettbacher assumed that all “injuries” and “deprivations” that the organism has to take on during the development phase in which the basic characteristics of personality are shaped by the physical and affective environment have a lasting impact on the whole life of a person and ultimately determine self-perception, the perception of other people, interpersonal behavior, one's own feelings and one's own actions in a wide variety of life situations. The aim of therapy according to J. Konrad Stettbacher is that the patient can recognize his "primary injuries" and finally get rid of their disruptive effects. Recognizing one's own primary injuries can be very painful and associated with suffering.

License withdrawal

The authorities withdrew Stettbacher's license to practice in 1995 due to a lack of proof of qualification. Psychologist Alice Miller , who had previously supported and recommended Stettbacher, discontinued this after it was discovered that he was not a qualified psychoanalyst.
