The class C57 ( Jap. 国鉄C57形蒸気機関車 , Kokutetsu C57 gata Joki Kikansha , such as "steam locomotive class C57 of the State Railway") is a 2C1 - steam locomotive , built in Japan from 1937 to 1947. A total of 201 locomotives from the C55 derived series C57 were built. Because of their elegant appearance, they were nicknamed "Lady".

The series was withdrawn from regular passenger train service in December 1975 .

Preserved copies

C57 1 in service, November 2009

As of 2012, 32 class C57 locomotives were received and two of them, C57 1 and C57 180, were kept operational.

In Taiwan, the CT273 locomotive remained operational.

C57 1

C57 1 is operated by JR West and maintained in the Shimonoseki Depot. Until at least 2009 it was used for special trains on a section of the Yamaguchi line from Shin-Yamaguchi via Yamaguchi to Tsuwano .

C57 180

Restored on behalf of JR East , the C57 180 pulls trains on the JR East Lines mainly between Niigata , Aizu-Wakamatsu and Koriyama on special events .

CT273

CT273 was procured from the railways of the Japanese colony of Taiwan in 1943 as C57 3, and after Taiwan gained independence it was re-designated as CT273 by the Taiwan Railway Administration (TRA). It was taken out of service in 1983 and refurbished by the TRA in Hualien in June 2014.
