Aizu-Wakamatsu ( Japanese 会 津 若 松 市 , -shi ) is a city in Fukushima Prefecture in the northern part of Honshū , the main island of Japan . Lacquer and lacquerware have been produced here since the 16th century .

Aizu-Wakamatsu is the center of the Aizu prefectural region and extends over the Aizu Basin ( 会 津 盆地 , Aizu-bonchi ). Inawashiro Lake is to the east .
Attractions
The Aizuwakamatsu Castle , also Tsurugajo ( 鶴ヶ城 , "Crane Castle", built in 1384), the Prince of Aizu was the strongest fortress in northeastern Japan. It was the heart of the city for over 600 years and was the last retreat of the Shogun-loyal troops under Saigō Tanomo and Ōtori Keisuke in Aizu during the Boshin War after the Battle of Bonari Pass . Destroyed by the Meiji government in 1874 , it was restored as a museum in 1965.
In the herb garden Oyakuen grow over 200 medicinal plants species .
The Aizu Bukeyashiki samurai residence is a reproduction of a feudal estate with main ancillary and servant houses and a mill. The one-story main house has 38 rooms.
The tombs of the Byakkotai are located on Iimoriyama Hill . In memory of the young samurai from Aizu there is a marble column from Pompeii (a gift from Mussolini in 1928) and a memorial stone “A German to the young knights of Aizu”, donated by the then German ambassador Hasso von Etzdorf .
