Ja'akov Moshe Toledano, 1960

Ja'akov Moshe Toledano ( Hebrew יעקב משה טולדאנו; * 1880 in Tiberias , Ottoman Empire ; † October 15, 1960 in Israel) was an Israeli rabbi and politician .

Life

After his school education he completed a rabbi training in his hometown. In 1903 his family moved to Corsica after a cholera epidemic . At the beginning of the First World War he had to leave Corsica together with other 700 Jews and then worked as a rabbi in Malta .

Toledano later worked as the Grand Rabbi of Cairo and Alexandria . After his election as the Sephardic Chief Rabbi of Tel Aviv in 1942 he moved to that city in Mandate Palestine , succeeding Rabbi Ben Zion Uziel in this capacity until 1958. Although he was not a member of the Knesset , Toledano was appointed Minister of Religion on December 3, 1958 and carried out this office until November 1959. When David Ben-Gurion established a new government on December 17, 1959, he returned as minister of religion and held this office until his death.

family

Toledano came from a family of Moroccan Jews in Meknes who settled in Tiberias. Toledano's father, Judah, immigrated from Morocco. The family name TOLEDANO means coming from Toledo . The family was expelled from Spain in 1492 to settle in Salonika, Greece.

  1. Daniel TOLEDANO (born 1570 Saloniki, Greece, died 1640 Fez, Morocco). His son, Joseph TOLEDANO, was the founder of the most important family branch. He left Greece in 1600 with his wife and two sons to emigrate to Fez in Morocco.
