Jaakov Meidad

Jaakov (Mio) Meidad pseudonym alias "Anton Künzle" ( Hebrew יעקב (מִיוֹ) מידד, "אנטון קינצלה"; * 1919 in Breslau ; † June 30, 2012 in Tel Aviv ) was an Israeli Mossad agent.

Life

His mother was a teacher, his father was the director of a hospital and had served as a medical officer in the Imperial Army during World War I and received the "Iron Cross". The parents sent their fifteen-year-old son to Palestine in 1934. His parents could no longer escape. His mother was murdered in Auschwitz and his father in Theresienstadt . He served in the Hagana , later in the British Army in World War II and in the Royal Artillery in the first week of the war and after 1945 with the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) and became Commander of the IDF artillery school . In Israel he worked as a Mossad agent. He worked as a teacher and "fatherly friend" for Mossad agent Sylvia Rafael .

Herbert's Cukurs in Montevideo (February 23, 1965)

In 1965 he was supposed to find and liquidate Cukurs . Meidad founded bogus companies in Vienna for this purpose, with these business papers Meidad alias "Anton Künzle" was able to lure Cukurs to Uruguay. There, Cukurs should take a stake in a branch of the entrepreneur Künzle. When Cukurs entered an alleged office of the front company in Montevideo in March 1965, the "hangman of Riga" was smashed in the head by several Israelis; afterwards Cukurs was shot dead. Other Mossad colleagues attribute this to Meidad as a "national [...] heroic act".
