Jack & Diane is a song by John Mellencamp from the year 1982 , which was written by him and on the album American Fool was released.

history

The 1962 film adaptation of Sweet Bird Youth served as inspiration for the text. Mellencamp said about the recording of the song: “Jack & Diane was terrible to record. When I played the guitar it sounded great and I never got to play in a band. That's why the arrangement looks so strange. Stopping and starting doesn't seem very musical. ”Mellencamp explained that the clapping in the song was not originally planned. The clapping only served as an aid to the tempo and should be cut out. He realized that without the "clapping" there would be no beat.

The recordings took place in the Criteria Studios in Miami , Mellencamp and Don Gehman (also the sound engineer of the song) were responsible for the production. Other guitarists and background singers were Mick Ronson , Mike Wanchic, Larry Crane, as drummer Kenny Aronoff , as bassist as background singer Robert Frank and as keyboardist Eric Rosser.

In 1982 Ronson worked with Mellencamp as guitarist on the American Fool album. In an interview at Classic Rock , Mellencamp said:

"Mick helped me (also) arrange the instrumentation for the song when I gave it up. Ronson came and played three or four tracks and worked on the American Fool album for four or five weeks. Suddenly, to Jack & Diane, Mick said, 'Johnny, you should use baby rattles there.' I thought, 'How the hell do you use baby rattles in songs?' So he put the beat there and sang 'let it rock, let it roll.' Kind of a chorus that I never had. And everyone remembers this piece of the song. It was Ronson's idea. "
