Jack Barkin

Jacob "Jack" Barkin (born April 23, 1914 in Uman , † January 15, 1996 in Fort Lauderdale ) was a Canadian singer (baritone).

The brother of the pianist Leo Barkin and the singer and pianist Sara Barkin had their first singing lessons from his father and, after the family moved to Canada, studied at the Toronto Conservatory of Music , the Eastman School of Music and in Philadelphia. In the mid-1950s he was a student of Fausto Cleva at the Metropolitan Opera , but turned down an engagement at the opera house. He worked as a cantor at synagogues in Washington, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Toronto ( Holy Blossom Temple 1967-69) and Detroit and sang in concert with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra . Around 1980 he moved to Florida, where he occasionally appeared as a guest cantor at religious events. His voice can be heard on a number of recordings ( Sholom Secunda's Family Chanukah Festival , 1964, Jacob Barkin in Concert , 1973, Cantorial Masterpieces and Jewish Folk Songs ).
