John Urquhart "Jack" Cropp (born May 23, 1927 in Hokitika ; † June 25, 2016 in Takaka ) was a New Zealand sailor .
successes
Jack Cropp took part in the Olympic Games in Melbourne in 1956 with Peter Mander in the Sharpie boat class and was in this Olympic champion . Although they were initially classified in second place overall after the last race, after a protest by the French crew, the top-placed Australians were disqualified for the last race. The two New Zealanders were tied on points with the Australians John Scott and Rolly Tasker , but had won three of the seven races, whereas the Australians only had two wins. Due to the larger number of races won, Mander and Cropp received the gold medal, while Scott and Tasker received silver. It was New Zealand's first ever Olympic gold medal in sailing.
In 1990 Cropp and Mander were inducted into the New Zealand Sports Hall of Fame .
